Developed in collaboration with packaging expert Mondi, the new envelope features a shock-absorbent paper-based lining that effectively protects products during delivery.

Unlike previous envelopes lined with bubble wrap, this design eliminates the need for plastic, making it fully recyclable at home.

Amazon’s commitment to reducing packaging waste is evident in this latest innovation.

By optimising the type, material, and weight of its packaging, the company aims to increase circularity, avoid waste, and reduce carbon emissions without compromising safety or functionality.

The paper-padded envelope offers several advantages over traditional packaging.

Its lightweight design reduces the overall weight of shipments, leading to a significant reduction in packaging materials used.

Additionally, the envelope’s flexibility allows for efficient packing without wasted space, further minimising environmental impact.

“Amazon stopped using traditional bubble wrap-padded envelopes in Europe several years ago, which presented a challenge to develop light, flexible and fully recyclable paper packaging that provides the same protection,” said Thais Blumer, European head of Sustainable Packaging for Amazon.

“Achieving both low weight and maximum protection with a 100% recyclable paper envelope was not an easy task, but these envelopes are easy to pack, simple for customers to recycle at home, and enable damage-free deliveries.”

The envelope’s strength and resilience come from its specially engineered paper construction and corrugated inner lining.

Despite its thin profile, Amazon said the packaging provides exceptional protection for products during transit.

The new paper-padded envelopes are available in three sizes and can be used to protect a variety of products, including skincare items, health supplements, home and office supplies, and toys.

Amazon’s dedication to sustainable packaging is evident in its broader efforts to reduce waste and carbon emissions.

More than 50% of Amazon Europe’s shipments now come in reduced, recyclable packaging, and the company said it has avoided more than three million tonnes of unnecessary packaging materials since 2015.

By reducing packaging, Amazon can also fit more packages into each delivery vehicle, leading to fewer journeys and contributing to its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
