The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International in the US is to approve a new safety standard for labelling and packaging individually wrapped liquid-detergent laundry packets.
Aimed at reducing risks of ingestion, particularly by children, the new standard (F3159-15, Consumer Safety Specification for Liquid Laundry Packets) explains the method to store liquid laundry detergent packets in opaque or other packaging.
The packaging is intended to make the product visible and label it with warning statements.
American Cleaning Institute (ACI) technical and international affairs executive vice-president Richard Sedlak said: "Manufacturers of liquid laundry detergent packets are very committed to reducing the number of accidents with these products involving children, which are used safely by millions of consumers.
"We maintain an unwavering commitment to consumer safety and look forward to continue working closely with our colleagues in the ASTM process."
Representing the detergent and cleaning products industry, ACI involves in ASTM technical activities.
