Chemical company BASF and industrial minerals producer Omya have partnered to jointly develop coater-ready barrier solutions for paper and cardboard packaging, in a move to cater to the increasing demand for water-based barrier solutions.
This partnership will provide a service for customers without the capacity and plant technology to prepare formulations and mixtures independently.
Under the partnership, BASF will supply barrier dispersions, while Omya will provide the pigments produced at its own facilities.
BASF claims that the coater-ready solutions comprise mainly pigments, additives and functional barrier dispersions.
Additionally, Omya’s sales channels will carry out marketing across Europe, with the first commercial product to be available in Q1.
BASF generated more than €74bn in sales during 2013 and employed more than 112,000 people as of the end of the year.
