Sustainable packaging materials company Billerud has introduced MediKraft SealBase, a new surface-treated medical paper.
This product is designed to cater to the increasing demands of the medical packaging industry and represents a significant addition to Billerud’s existing medical paper-based offerings.
MediKraft SealBase is set to be introduced later this month at the COMPAMED medical tech fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The paper product is produced at the company’s Skärblacka mill in Sweden and is crafted from virgin fibre.
The 38gsm-grade paper is claimed to be the first in a new range, developed as a base paper for medical synthetic cold-seal coatings.
It is an ideal solution for medical applications where a sterile barrier system is not required such as plaster packaging, and shows promise for use as an alternative to latex-based cold-seal coatings.

“This is a strategic step in broadening Billerud’s product portfolio in medical paper, allowing us to cater to a wider range of medical applications and customers seeking alternatives to traditional latex-based cold-seal products.”
SteriKraft is a microbial barrier medical paper suitable for various sterilisation methods while MediKraft is designed for applications that do not require microbial barrier properties.
MediKraft SealBase’s safety is ensured by Billerud’s integrated pulp production and stringent quality control systems, including the absence of optical brightening agents and comprehensive bioburden testing.
Its machine-glazed side enhances printability, making it a suitable option for medical packaging needs.
MediKraft SealBase is also a recyclable product that supports the company’s goal to minimise its environmental impact.
In May this year, Billerud announced a strategic shift, cancelling plans to convert its Escanaba mill into a cartonboard production facility.
