BillerudKorsnäs has launched its first climate-positive packaging, D-Sack, co-developed with Swiss manufacturer LafargeHolcim.
Designed to carry cement and other construction materials, D-Sack is a dissolvable sack that can be disintegrated in a conventional mixer and the bio-based carbon in the paper is captured in the construction itself.

By GlobalDataBillerudKorsnäs Sack Solutions business development director Mark van der Merwe said: “I am extremely proud of this achievement and very pleased that D-Sack has now been formally launched.
“It is an innovation that has been produced in our sack laboratory in close cooperation with LafargeHolcim designed to meet specific user needs and needs in the value chain. The sack laboratory has done an excellent job and set the standard for innovation in the packaging industry.”
The dissolvable quality of D-Sack during the mixing process helps minimise wasting cement and eliminates packaging waste, while saving time and providing a cleaner, safer and healthier workplace.
In a lifecycle evaluation carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, the sack demonstrated its capacity to capture carbon over a 100-year timeframe, enhancing its climate-positive function.
Carbon captured from the atmosphere during tree growth is incorporated into the paper and is then stored in the concrete structure.
BillerudKorsnäs communication and sustainability senior vice-president Henrik Essén said: “We believe in the potential of developing existing solutions further, in our business, as well as in the packaging industry.
“Concepts like D-Sack, i.e results of innovativeness and cooperation, strengthen our contribution to a sustainable future.”
