Multinational bottling company Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has launched a new paperboard packaging solution.
The CanCollar packaging is certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and designed for multipack cans in Spain.
The launch is in line with its partnership with Coca-Cola to remove all hard to recycle plastic from its portfolio, thereby eliminating more than 11,000t of virgin plastic annually in western Europe.
CCEP will initially launch the recyclable and sustainably sourced paperboard CanCollar in the Balearic Islands in November 2020.
The company has collaborated with sustainable differentiated packaging solutions provider Westrock.
Coca-Cola European Partners sustainability vice-president Joe Franses said: “The agreement with WestRock exemplifies our clear commitment to reducing plastic in our secondary packaging.

By GlobalData“By the end of 2020, we will have removed more than 4,000t of hard-to-recycle plastic from our secondary packaging in Western Europe.
“It’s through collaborating on innovative packaging solutions like CanCollar that we are able to do this.”
As part of this initiative, CCEP invested €2.6m in its Barcelona plant. It will install WestRock’s CanCollar Fortuna manufacturing equipment for grouping multipack cans sustainably.
The company will replace the Hi-cone solution with the CanCollar paperboard can ring technology in the Balearic Islands. It will help in saving more than 18t of plastic a year.
