Sustainable packaging solution provider Coveris has opened a new vacuum skin packaging (VSP) manufacturing facility in Winsford, Cheshire, UK.

The site’s inauguration was conducted by Mid Cheshire Member of Parliament Andrew Cooper.

In April 2024, Coveris announced a substantial investment in its Winsford site, which is claimed to be the largest blown-extrusion facility for polyethylene (PE) films in the UK.

The investment includes a dedicated conversion hall and specialist manufacturing equipment, positioning Coveris as the UK’s sole producer of VSP.

VSP is renowned for its skin-like fit-around products, offering a premium look and extending shelf life by up to 28 days, thereby contributing to reduced food waste.

The new facility will leverage Coveris’ expertise in producing nine-layer ethylene-vinyl alcohol barrier film, catering to the meat and dairy sectors.

Coveris Winsford managing director Sujoy Bose said: “This is a significant investment for the site and an exciting opportunity for us to grow as the UK’s only producer of vacuum skin packaging.

“We were also proud to showcase the advancements we are making in support of our No Waste strategy, including our award-winning sustainable packaging innovations and projects to drive down waste and operate more efficiently, driven by the dedicated team at Coveris Winsford.”

Earlier in the year, Coveris Winsford’s commitment to sustainability and performance was acknowledged at the Weetabix Supplier Awards, where the company received the Weetabix Supplier Innovation Award for its supply of recyclable and downgauged cereal liners, Cereal+.

Last month, Coveris invested more than £3m ($3.82m) in a new flexographic press at its HD print hub in Burnley, UK.
