Global technology company Voith has been contracted by fibre-based products supplier Domtar to support its Kingsport mill conversion to containerboard.
Under the agreement, Voith will deliver equipment and technical services for converting the paper machine at Kingsport mill in Tennessee, US.
Expected to be complete in 2022, the mill will produce recycled containerboard and high-performance lightweight packaging and industry-standard grades.
The Kingsport Mill will be capable of producing 600,000 tonnes of high-quality recycled linerboard and corrugated medium a year, thereby becoming North America’s premier lightweight containerboard facility.
Voith paper division projects president Dr Michael Trefz said: “The Voith team is excited to work with Domtar on this state-of-the-art conversion.
“We worked closely with their teams to design the needed technical scope to produce the demanding grades they are planning for the machine and the market they are targeting.

The two sides also entered an agreement in August for a full recycled stock preparation system for the Kingsport Mill.
The agreement also covered water, sludge and reject handling systems for increased efficiency and quality.
Domtar president and CEO John Williams said: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with Voith as we repurpose our Kingsport Mill to enter the containerboard market.
“Voith is an ideal partner for this project, able to provide the entire scope of supply from raw material receipt to finished product.”
In April, Domtar closed the acquisition of the point-of-sale (POS) paper business for an undisclosed sum.
