Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics has developed a new trash bag made from post-industrial plastic scrap.
The bags are developed in collaboration with flexible packaging manufacturer Bemis and Canada-based converter Polykar as part of the Trash Free Seas Alliance.
The recycled bags will be used to clean US beaches under the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup campaign, and are expected to facilitate packaging recycling.
As part of the initiative to develop the trash bags, Bemis collected the post-industrial plastic scraps, which were sent to Polykar.
Using its plastic recycling machines, Polykar combined the reclaimed plastics with Dow’s Retain technology to produce the recycled plastic resin, which was used as a raw material to make the bags.
Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics global sustainability director Jeff Wooster said: “As the largest provider of plastics in the packaging industry, Dow is a global advocate for resource recovery technologies.

By GlobalData“We’ve taken on the challenge with Bemis and Polykar, alongside the Trash Free Seas Alliance, to increase post-industrial recycling and extend sustainable industrial practices to address a worldwide problem.
“We know that if we work together, we can find a way to recover plastic waste and use it to make an even a bigger impact on reducing marine debris.”
The Trash Free Seas Alliance is a global initiative led by the Ocean Conservancy that aims to unite industry, science and conservation leaders to develop land-based solutions that would prevent dumping plastic debris to the oceans.
The alliance identified the major pathways of plastic leakage into the ocean and submitted a report to treat the plastic waste before it reaches the ocean.
Dow is a founding member of the Trash Free Seas Alliance.
