Slovenia-based security solution provider DOM-TITAN has partnered with packaging company DS Smith to develop cardboard packaging to replace styrofoam fillings.
DS Smith designed the packaging in line with its circular design principles and PackRight development methodology.
The recyclable fillings remove the need to use disposable styrofoam in the packing process, which has allowed DOM-TITAN to remove 1.7t of styrofoam from its operations.
The packaging is made from sustainably sourced certified paper containing around 80% recycled fibres. It can be recycled in existing systems.
In addition, the solution allows more products to be loaded onto each pallet, allowing DOM-TITAN to reduce its carbon footprint by 20%.
DOM-TITAN design author Igor Plevel said: “Very few packaging companies have such a good development department that could compete with DS Smith’s PackRight Centre.

By GlobalData“We have chosen DS Smith as a partner in the project of circular packaging fillings as they have been supplying us with quality materials for decades.
“They choose the right type of material for a specific product and are always ready to participate in creating and developing new packaging solutions.”
DS Smith designed the packaging in accordance with different phases of the product supply chain. The company developed prototypes and tested them with DOM-TITAN.
DS Smith Slovenia sales director Jožica Hojnik said: “Companies are looking for packaging that is circular, that is easily recycled or reused and has zero impact on the environment.
“We are already talking about packaging with a zero-carbon footprint.”
DS Smith has pledged to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2030.
In February, the company introduced Greentote, a fully recyclable modular container, for grocery stores and consumers.
The food-contact safe container features Greencoat, DS Smith’s proprietary coated, water-resistant packaging solution.
Greentote is available in two sizes and is said to hold more than three times more groceries than plastic bags.
