Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and RECAPP by Veolia have achieved a significant milestone in their collaborative efforts to enhance aluminium recycling in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Since the inception of their partnership, the partners have completed more than 14,000 collections from schools and homes.

The initiative, which began with 12 schools in proximity to EGA’s operations in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah, has expanded to include 20 educational institutions, as well as residential collections.

Throughout the year, EGA and RECAPP have gathered 145,000 used drink cans.

Annually, approximately 660 million aluminium beverage cans are consumed in the UAE, of which only 33% are recycled, according to the parties.

Meanwhile, leading aluminium recycling countries have recorded a more than 95% recycling rate.

RECAPP by Veolia general manager Jerome Viricel said: “Aluminium is infinitely recyclable, and recycling aluminium takes 95% less energy than making new metal.

“I am confident that by diverting aluminium waste from the UAE’s landfills and guiding students and residents to the right approach in recycling aluminium, this partnership will further bolster national efforts towards sustainability and strengthen the recycling reflex across the country.

“This project underscores Veolia’s dedication to ecological transformation, and closely aligns with our ambitious new GreenUp plan that focuses on high-impact solutions while strengthening our decarbonisation commitments.”

As a member of the Aluminium Recycling Coalition, founded by EGA in 2023, RECAPP by Veolia is at the forefront of promoting recycling within the UAE.

This coalition unites can-makers, beverage producers, and waste-management companies to enhance recycling practices.

EGA is also constructing what it claims to be its largest aluminium recycling plant at Al Taweelah.

Once operational, the plant will have a recycling capacity of 170,000 tonnes per year.
