Germany-based printing ink manufacturer Siegwerk has entered a deal to acquire Schekolin’s plastic packaging business unit, Plastic Tubes and Laminates, for an undisclosed sum.
The proposed deal is expected to expand Siegwerk’s portfolio of specialty ultraviolet (UV) ink varnishes, which are suitable for use in plastic packaging.
As part of the deal, Plastic Tubes and Laminates' technical expertise, product portfolio and manufacturing equipment will be transferred to Siegwerk.
Both companies have also entered a toll manufacturing agreement, under which Siegwerk will continue to manufacture its solutions for at least four months to ensure a smooth transition.
Siegwerk EMEA BU narrow web head Michael Mueller-Samson said: “The purchase of Schekolin’s plastic packaging business complements our portfolio with high-quality varnishes and reinforces our position in UV curing solutions.
“By integrating Schekolin’s products we expand our offering for customers asking for specialty solutions for high-end packaging, and are able to target our customers’ individual needs even more effectively.”
In addition, the acquisition will allow Siegwerk to provide a full range of UV inks and varnishes for packaging applications.
The varnishes can be used on a variety of laminates and tubes based on plastic substrates, such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).
In July 2016, Siegwerk won approval from the competition authorities to sell its web offset business to Flint Group, allowing the company to focus on packaging printing solutions.
