Paper-based packaging leader Graphic Packaging International (GPI) has announced plans to make multiple machinery investments in several European and Australian locations.
The new investments will help the company to address rising demand for its PaperSeal tray, a sustainable barrier-lined solution made from renewable paperboard.
GPI will install PaperSeal tray machinery in company and partner locations across Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Greece and Australia.
GPI business development director Paul Tye said: “The success we’ve seen with our PaperSeal tray in 2020 has been phenomenal. With the focus on sustainability, major European retailers are making the switch to recyclable and reusable packaging substrates, especially those made from renewable resources, to reduce their impact on the environment.
“Our barrier-lined paperboard solution, the PaperSeal tray, can help meet those targets by reducing the amount of plastic required to help preserve and best present food.
“It provides long-lasting freshness due to its consistent seal integrity, helping to reduce food waste. In addition, the consumer can easily separate the film liner from the paperboard, aiding recyclability post-use.”

By GlobalDataCurrently being used by several brands in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and elsewhere, the PaperSeal tray is designed to reduce plastic packaging use on fresh and processed meat and fish, cheese, salad and fruits. It features vacuum skin packaging (VSP) or modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) heat-sealing technology.
It also offers high-quality graphical capabilities to enable on-shelf differentiation.
Last month, GPI collaborated with Liffey Meats and Irish supermarket chain Lidl Ireland to produce the PaperSeal tray.
