German adhesives company Henkel has received certification from the cyclos-HTP Institute (CHI) for its water-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive, Aquence PS 3017 RE, confirming its compatibility with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) cycling processes.
The certification recognises the adhesive’s ability to not negatively affect the recycling path for transparent PET bottles when used with a polyolefin substrate label.
Designed as a sustainable solution to facilitate the recycling of PET flakes, Aquence PS 3017 RE is designed for the wash-off olefinic film labels used for PET bottles.
The Aquence PS 3017 RE offers an energy-efficient alternative to conventional high-temperature label removal methods.
The adhesive’s wash-off performance ensures that labels can be removed efficiently at lower temperatures, thus reducing energy consumption during the recycling process.
Henkel’s adhesive solution is particularly effective at a wash-off temperature of 65°C for PE facestock and boasts excellent food contact approval and resistance to water whitening, maintaining the transparency of clear labels over time.

By GlobalDataHenkel tapes and labels market strategy director Elodie Picard said: “We are delighted to receive independent confirmation of how this innovative adhesive can help optimise recyclability and help to support the circular economy.
“We are proud to work with our partners across the packaging and recycling value chains to help reduce packaging waste while delivering higher quality recyclates.
“Indeed, this will be essential to help meet regulations that require a greater proportion of recycled material in plastic packaging. By ensuring that labels and adhesives are part of the solution, Henkel is helping to create a more sustainable future for plastic packaging.”
Henkel’s water-based acrylics for wash-off labels have been successfully qualified for use with brands from Henkel’s consumer brands business unit.
Earlier this month, Henkel announced an engagement programme called ‘Climate Connect‘ for its worldwide packaging, traded goods, and raw material suppliers.
