Hochwald, a Germany-headquartered dairy and food group, has selected Elopak Pure-Pak cartons for its fresh dairy and mixed milk beverages.

This move is part of Hochwald’s strategy to utilise filling technology that is both flexible and robust.

The Bärenmarke brand, along with regional brands ‘Hochwald’ and ‘Tuffi’, will now be packaged in Pure-Pak cartons, which contain approximately 50% less plastic than the previous packaging.

The adoption of Pure-Pak cartons is significant for Hochwald, especially for its Bärenmarke brand, which holds a strong position in the German fresh milk market.

The new packaging not only reduces plastic usage but also increases the proportion of renewable materials by 10%, aiding the company in cutting carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and enhancing its sustainability profile.

Consumers will find the gable top carton more convenient and space-efficient due to its easy fold line.

Additionally, the cartons are equipped with the Pure-TwistFlip 34i tethered closure, which improves user experience with its ease of opening, resealing, and pouring.

The decision to switch to Pure-Pak cartons followed an independent consumer survey where Elopak’s packaging solution garnered 77% purchase intent, the highest among the options presented.

All products manufactured and bottled at Hochwald’s Hungen site, including the Bärenmarke bear brand’s fresh milk, fresh cocoa, and fresh iced coffee varieties, will benefit from this change.

Hochwald Hungen site plant manager Daniel Birker said: “The cooperation is highly professional and we appreciate the pronounced customer orientation of the project team.

“We were looking for a system solution that was not only robust and reliable, but also impressive with flexibility and intuitive operation. The new packaging also significantly reduces our plastic consumption and helps us to reduce CO₂ emissions.”

Elopak’s filling machines, installed by Shikoku, boast a 95% line efficiency and can fill up to 14,000 cartons per hour.

These machines allow different sizes and carton variants to be used interchangeably with ease.

In February this year, France-based dairy brand Yoplait launched a new line of yoghurts, Yoplait en Brique, packaged in Elopak’s fibre-based sustainable Pure-Pak eSense cartons.
