French sustainable packaging material producer Lactips has partnered with environmental non-profit organisation CITEO to develop a coating solution for food and non-food applications.
Known as Plastic Free Paper, the paper packaging coating is fully bio-sourced and replaces the plastics and chemical treatments normally required for sealable packaging papers.

The solution contains no plastic, perfluorinated or polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS).
It also meets food contact standards and complements the barrier properties of cellulose packaging without impacting its end-of-life.
Plastic Free Paper helps preserve food products by creating oxygen, fat and mineral oil barriers.
The cellulose matrix coating is home compostable and heat-sealed. It combines Lactips-developed thermoplastic with the papers to ensure the paper and cardboard is fully recyclable.

By GlobalDataLactips has performed tests with Centre Technique du Papier in France and Papiertechnische Stiftung in Germany to confirm the recyclability of the papers and cardboards without impact.
Plastic Free Paper will be made available to suppliers in the first half of next year.
In a statement, Lactips said: “The Plastic Free Paper solution offers an alternative for manufacturers in line with the European directive restricting single-use plastics.
“The material developed by Lactips is a natural polymer, in accordance with European Regulation no.1907/2006 (REACH), exempt from the demands and restrictions set by this directive.”
The natural polymer offers several technical features and is intended to help manufacturers with their environmental and regulatory transitions.
Lactips produces a fully bio-sourced casein-based plastic material that is biodegradable in water and home compostable.
The company’s pellets are used to manufacture fully natural and biodegradable solutions for both food and non-food applications.
In August, US-based food packaging company Zume launched an alternative to PFAS for food packaging manufacturers in collaboration with speciality chemicals producer Solenis.
Zume also announced it would stop producing products containing PFAS at its California packaging facility with immediate effect.
