Foodservice packaging products manufacturer Lollicup USA has started production of its Karat line of disposable plastic cups at its 300,300ft² Chino plant in California.
The Chino plant contains the company’s offices as well as distribution and production space. It features automated high-capacity and high-speed German equipment, allowing the company to manufacture around 1 million cups a day.
Lollicup USA co-founder, president and CEO Alan Yu said that with manufacturing gaining traction in the country, more companies are bringing manufacturing back and more consumers are looking for products that are made in the US.
"We moved manufacturing from Asia to the US because we saw the increasing demand of US-made products and a trend of consumers having a preference for these products," he said.
"The cost of labour in Asia has also risen significantly and there are too many uncertainties."
The process of manufacturing plastic cups requires plastic pellets to be mixed with recycled plastic and melted to liquid form. They are later rolled onto a flat sheet and cut to size to save materials.
Lollicup intends to start manufacturing paper cold cups in June.
