Spain-based frozen food manufacturer Maheso has introduced new sustainable packaging for its Pop Nuggets brand of chicken snacks.
Maheso changed its existing carton packaging to a new format made from flexible material for production of the new packaging.
The new packs were printed by flexible packaging solutions provider Inplacsa using the Comexi Offset Ci8 press. The press produces packaging without using solvents, avoiding emissions of volatile compounds to the atmosphere.
The Comexi Offset Ci8 press combines the advantages of both offset variable length and flexo central impression drum printing for flexible packaging and labels. The offset technology uses lithographic plates that are cheaper than photopolymers or engraved cylinders used in traditional flexo and rotogravure technologies. The combination overcomes conventional in-line offset machines by easily printing thinner as well as elastic materials such as OPP, PET, PE and PA.
According to Comexi, the cost reduction in the process allows for changes of design and language and the addition of new logos and promotional campaigns, which is helpful in reducing minimum print runs and keeping print film in stock. The energy efficient press uses solventless inks and offers better-quality printing with production flexibility and quick response times.
Maheso will exhibit its Pop Nuggets snacks in the new packaging during international food and drinks event Alimentaria 2014, to be held in Barcelona, Spain.
