Finnish construction company SRV has into entered into a new agreement with Metsä Group to commence the development phase for a new fibre products materials factory.
Spanning approximately 20,000m², the facility will be located at Metsä’s Rauma factory site in Finland.
The new plant will produce sustainable packaging materials using wood-based fibres.
It will use a novel technology to transform wet fibre pulp directly into 3D packaging products, eliminating intermediate processes, Metsä said.
SRV and Metsä are undertaking this preliminary planning effort during the development phase of the factory to assess the project’s investment potential by the year’s end.
A separate investment decision by Metsä is required for the project to proceed. Once confirmed, the project will be added to SRV’s order backlog.

By GlobalDataThe collaborative project management contract for the development phase has already been initiated.
This encompasses the refinement of technical plans, the formulation of the implementation and project plan, and the innovation of related solutions.
This phase is critical for laying the groundwork for the factory’s construction and operations.
SRV Regional Units senior vice-president Tero Karislahti said: “We are looking forward to working with Metsä Group to advance the implementation of new fibre products factory with a modern two-stage project management model. We believe that the use of collaborative implementation models in industrial construction projects will become well-established in the near future.
“With a similar contract model, we have successfully implemented the multipurpose hall for Rauma Marine Constructions as well as a factory building in Vantaa for the silicon disc manufacturer Okmetic, among others. We are currently also building a Kerto LVL [laminated veneer lumber] mill in Äänekoski for Metsä Group.”
In addition to SRV, Metsä has engaged several key partners for the pre-engineering phase.
Elomatic will serve as the main design partner, Valmet as the process engineer for the fibre product, and A-insinöörit Suunnittelu will handle the plant construction design.
Metsä Group innovation company Metsä Spring project director Veli-Pekka Kyllönen said: “Cooperation with SRV during the development phase of the project is an important part of the pre-engineering of the fibre products factory. We rely on SRV´s modern operating method and strong experience-based know-how.”
