Mitsubishi Polyester Film, a US-based subsidiary of Mitsubishi Plastics, has planned a $100m expansion of its production facility in Greer, South Carolina.

The expansion plan will set up a new polyester film production line at the facility, which is located at 2001 Hood Road in Greer.

This new line is expected to be equipped with a high level of technology to boost production-efficiency of the facility, which is claimed to be the largest polyester film plant in the US.

Expected to be completed by mid-2017, the additional capacity is likely to drive the firm’s expansion in both US and overseas markets.

"This expansion further enhances our ability to support our customers and markets with value-added, low-cost solutions."

The existing facility employs more than 500 people in various roles and produces a wide range of speciality films for use in industrial, packaging and electronics applications.

Mitsubishi Polyester Film America president and COO Bill Radlein said: "This expansion further enhances our ability to support our customers and markets with value-added, low-cost solutions, while at the same time providing employment for the more than 500 families that depend on our business for their livelihood."

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley said: "Mitsubishi Polyester Film has been operating in South Carolina for more than five decades, and their continued commitment to our state is something we are extremely proud of.

"This $100m investment to upgrade their existing facility is a tremendous win for Greenville County and for the state of South Carolina as a whole."

Currently seeking ways for business expansion, Mitsubishi Plastics has also started operations at a new converted polyester film product plant in China in July.

In May, the firm had initiated a moisture transmission film manufacturing line in Indonesia.
