Mitsui Chemicals has collaborated with Indian company Bilcare to develop the XSP series of Chemipearl, a high-performance water-based heat seal coating for pharmaceutical blister packaging.

The new Chemipearl XSP is said to provide an environment-friendly alternative to the existing heat seal coatings.

Chemipearl XSP will help the converting companies reduce volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions.

These companies produce a coated aluminium lid foil and release the solvent directly to open air, polluting the environment.

“Chemipearl XSP will help the converting companies reduce volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions.”

The introduction of the new solution will also indirectly help pharmaceutical companies to reduce carbon footprints and develop sustainable packaging solutions.

Under the collaboration, Bilcare aims to leverage on the Mitsui Chemicals technology to deliver Al foils coated with water-based heat seal under the Zeon Aqua brand to the pharmaceutical packaging industry for the PTP blister packaging application.

Major pharmaceutical companies in India are currently conducting stability tests of Chemipearl XSP based Al foil.

Sold as a ‘converter-ready solution’, Chemipearl XSP can be applied to Al foil and paper by a gravure coating system.

Chemipearl XSP coated Al foil can be directly sealed with PVC and PVDC, and can be used in both flat seal and high-speed rotary seal blister packaging machines.

The solution also offers improved sealing at low-heat seal temperatures and can be used for packing temperature sensitive medicines.
