UK-based sustainable packaging and paper company Mondi is rolling out its water-soluble cement bag, SolmixBag, in the Balearic Islands, Spain.
The company has partnered with global building materials company CEMEX to introduce SolmixBag to the construction industry across the Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca islands.
Mondi and Cemex, which share more than a decade-long partnership, first entered into a collaboration for SolmixBag in 2021.
Cemex’s decision to select SolmixBag comes in response to its requirement for a sustainable cement bag that can meet the legal landfilling and waste incineration standards of the Spanish islands.
SolmixBag, which adheres to extended producer responsibility (EPR) principles, was identified as an appropriate solution by both Mondi and Cemex to drive sustainability and achieve zero-waste targets.
Cemex Balearic Islands commercial manager Nadal Mateu Piña said: “Mondi has provided the perfect product for our needs: we are now packaging our most sustainable cement in our product portfolio, CEM IV/B -(P) 32,5 SR- ECO+SR, in Mondi’s SolmixBag.

By GlobalData“Strict legal requirements on the Balearic Islands on landfilling and incineration of waste and EPR have initiated this move, and we aim to use this as best practice example to proactively roll out in different regions and countries. The launch not only delivers for the local industry, but it also complies with our own sustainability roadmap ‘Future in Action’.”
Made using 100% kraft paper, SolmixBag is a one-ply water-soluble paper bag that can carry and transport dry cement, as well as screed and coarse premixes.
The design of these bags supports disintegration during the mixing process while minimising dust and waste on the building site.
Mondi highlighted that SolmixBag is also resistant to punctures.
When put in the cement mixer, the fibre packaging of the bag integrates with the cement, leaving zero waste.
The bag can reportedly be used on available filling machines, offering the same durability, strength, and shelf life as that of a conventional paper bag.
Mondi launched SolmixBag in collaboration with building materials supplier Baumit in June last year.
