Packaging and paper manufacturer Mondi has announced the start-up of a new speciality kraft paper machine at its Czech Republic mill in Štětí.
The company invested €67m in the machine to produce the EcoVantage two-ply range of paper, which is 100% recyclable and can be used for retail and online shopping bags.
The EcoVantage range can be produced with mainly fresh fibre-based material.
Mondi strategy and product management kraft paper head Kalle Taari said: “We want to offer converters and brand owners sustainable, 100% recyclable paper-based products for their retail and online shopping packaging.
“The papers produced on this machine will offer recycled fibre-based products with a natural look, great printability and strength properties, all pre-requisites for consumer shopping bags.
“We are excited to be rolling out several options from our EcoVantage range throughout 2021.”
Mondi’s new paper machine will be capable of producing up to 130,000t of speciality kraft paper annually. It has a trim width of 4.4m and a substance range from 70g to 135g.
With the new paper mill, Mondi will have the largest product portfolio for consumer shopping bags in Europe, including white and brown virgin grades and the new recycled paper grades.
In November, Mondi and Fiorini International developed a 100% recyclable paper rice bag for Italian rice producer Riseria Vignola Giovanni.
