Multinational packaging and paper company Mondi has opened a laboratory in České Budějovice, Czech Republic, for the testing of packaging solutions.
The International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) certified laboratory will offer a range of transport performance tests, including ISTA 6 certification testing for packaging.
It is also designed to help improve existing packaging standards to prevent product damages in transit.
The laboratory is located at Mondi Bupak, one of the company’s flagship corrugated solution plants in Central Europe and an e-commerce packaging development and production hub.
Mondi said that the laboratory features the latest testing equipment to carry out simulations of various impacts on packed goods, such as compression, dropping, vibration and clamping.
The facility is also a partner of choice for testing Amazon’s Tier 1-3 compliant packaging as it is a member of the Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier Network (APASS).

By GlobalDataMondi Corrugated Solutions sales and marketing director Tarik Aniba said: “Thorough and ISTA-standard testing eliminates the risk of product breakage and claims, and thus reduces costs and reputational damage for our customers.
“Performance tests also help us assess how existing packaging can be improved and processes sped up.
“Offering this service at our lab is another way we help our customers adapt to changing market requirements and remain agile, competitive and sustainable.”
Online retailers and couriers increasingly require proof that their packaging complies with ISTA standards.
This has led to growing demand from fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), consumer durables and industrial companies to have their packaging performance-tested.
Last month, Mondi announced a €20m ($22.5m) investment in its Frantschach mill in Austria.
The investment will be used to make the company’s pulp production more sustainable by building an evaporation plant at the mill.
Last year, Mondi registered revenues of €6.66bn and underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of €1.35bn.
