Mondi has unveiled a new secondary paper packaging solution, ‘TrayWrap’, to replace plastic shrink film used for bundling food and beverage products.
The new sustainable packaging option, made using Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap range, is currently being used by a coffee brand in Sweden to secure 12 coffee packages for transportation purposes.
The paper-based wrap secures the coffee packs firmly in place using four to six adhesive dots on the bottom side of the existing corrugated tray.
Prepunched folding points on each open side ensure product stability, stackability, and visibility, as well as ease of unpacking for sale.
TrayWrap is crafted from 100% kraft paper, which is sourced from renewable resources, and features a lack of coating, making it fully recyclable.
The recyclability of this range makes it suitable for retail customers to dispose of within Europe’s existing paper recycling streams.

By GlobalDataMondi highlighted that the mechanical properties of Advantage StretchWrap combine high strength and puncture resistance with significant stretchability.
This further makes TrayWrap suitable for grouped packaging applications and aligns with upcoming European regulatory requirements.
In support of the latest launch, Mondi worked in close alliance with Meurer to ensure that existing machinery could be adapted to produce TrayWrap, allowing food and drink producers to modify their respective processes without the need for new machine investments.
Meurer subjected its Paper Hood Machine, which employs inline paper technology to handle a broad spectrum of paper qualities, including Mondi’s Advantage StretchWrap, and various tray formats with high resistance to mechanical stress.
Independent testing has also confirmed the effectiveness of TrayWrap, according to Mondi.
Mondi Kraft Paper business development manager Larsgoran Berglund said: “By working closely with Meurer, we are jointly mapping out a path to sustainability that is convenient for customers, supporting them in achieving their own sustainability goals.”
