Paper and packaging company Mondi is collaborating with UK packaging supplier Welton, Bibby and Baron (WBB) to launch recyclable, paper-based bread bags.
The collaboration sees WBB utilising Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper to develop brown and white paper bags for various prepacked bread products.
This packaging solution not only maintains the freshness of prepacked bread but also offers a sustainable alternative to the previous packaging forms that are typically unrecyclable.
The base kraft paper used for these bags is produced from responsibly sourced fibres and receives an in-house coating from Mondi, ensuring that the packaging possesses essential barrier properties.
The solution provides strong protection against water vapour, grease, and moisture, which are crucial for keeping bread fresh and edible.
The premium look of both the brown and white paper bags is enhanced by windows that allow consumers to view the bread inside.

By GlobalDataThe brown bag features a glassine window that can be recycled with paper while the white bag has a detachable film window that consumers can easily separate and dispose of in dedicated recycling bins.
These paper bags have earned a recycling label from the On Pack Recycling Label Scheme (OPRL) and can be recycled through kerbside collection, offering convenience to consumers throughout the UK.
Mondi Functional Paper and Films business solutions manager Mick Robinson said: “With our MAP2030 [Mondi Action Plan 2030] sustainability targets, we are fully committed to developing circular packaging options to satisfy our customers and their end users, who are looking for more sustainable and convenient solutions in their shopping habits and overall lifestyles.
