Swedish grocery retail shop operator Coop has selected paperboard material Invercote Bio, produced by Iggesund Paperboard, for its own-brand frozen berries for ecological reasons.
Although it is more costly than traditional PE coatings, the virgin-fibre-based board material is covered with bioplastic, making it compostable.
Coop sustainability manager Louise König said: "This decision was totally in line with our sustainability policy and is actually not that unusual because we incorporate sustainability thinking into all our business deliberations."
Sweden-based printing services provider Trosa Tryckeri created the berry package in partnership with berry supplier Olle Svenssons Partiaffär.
The brand is part of Coop’s Änglamark line of organic, fair trade or environmentally or allergy adapted products.
Trosa Tryckeri project manager Henrik Bjurbäck said that the target was to launch packaging which stands out from the customary rectangular packs found in store freezers.
