Hindalco Industries subsidiary Novelis has announced the commissioning of a new €15m aluminium slitting and packing line at its joint-venture facility in Neuss, Germany.

Novelis Europe can vice president and general manager Pierre Labat said that the company is continuously investing to strengthen its position by increasing the production of can sheets and its used drinks can recycling capacity.

"This investment reflects the solid growth of the aluminium drinks can market in Europe, which has resulted in significantly increased can sheet sales," Labat added.

European drinks companies are increasingly switching to recyclable aluminium packaging due to its ease of transport and improved ability to preserve products.

Novelis recently upgraded its Latchford, UK recycling facility by increasing capacity to around 60,000t. The company also plans to commission an aluminium recycling centre in Nachterstedt, with a capacity of around 400,000t. The investments are part of the company’s global strategy to raise the recycled content of its products to 80% by 2020.

Novelis operates in nine countries, supplying aluminium sheet and foil products to automotive, transportation, packaging, construction, industrial and consumer electronics markets in North America, Europe, Asia and South America.
