PAC Worldwide, a flexible packaging company, has announced a substantial reduction of 32.65% in its scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, bringing the total down to 883.72 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023.

This milestone was highlighted in the company’s annual Sustainability Report, which includes data for the full year of 2023.

The report specifies that the reduction pertains to fuel sources such as natural gas, diesel, and various other designated fuels.

In addition to scope 1, PAC Worldwide reported a 4% decrease in scope 2 emissions compared to 2022.

However, scope 3 emissions remained unchanged as 2023 is the baseline year.

The company also noted an increase in the use of post-industrial recycled content, reaching 21% for its polymer products, the highest in its nearly 50-year history.

Furthermore, 43% of PAC’s products are now recyclable, reusable, or compostable, with 95.9% of its plastic packaging designed for recycling.

The report also indicates that PAC Worldwide’s total post-consumer recycled (PCR) content rose from 15% to 17% over the year.

As part of its commitment to the Ellen MacArthur Global Commitment Pledge, the company is working towards ensuring that all its plastic packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2025, including at least 10% PCR content.

In 2023, PAC also achieved a 49.82% reduction in water usage and a 7.32% reduction in energy use from the previous year.

PAC’s line of stock products also received certification for recyclability by Trex’s NexTrex programme and the ‘Optimally Recyclable’ designation for its Ecojacket packages by How2Recycle.

PAC Worldwide president Thomas Parenteau said: “Our annual Sustainability Report gives us the opportunity to educate our peers and our supply chain, both upstream and downstream, on specific ways in which we can and are making a difference. This includes our customer base as well as critical stakeholders such as recyclers and regulators.”

In October last year, PAC Worldwide expanded its capabilities in Central America with the opening of a new full-service flexible packaging facility in Mexico.
