Patagonia, a well-known outdoor apparel company, has strengthened its environmental commitments by joining Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative.
Canopy, a non-profit organisation focused on protecting forests, species, and the climate, works with companies to reduce the environmental impact of their packaging.
Patagonia’s latest step is part of its broader effort to develop more sustainable solutions for its packaging materials.
Focus on sustainable packaging materials
Since 2013, Patagonia has been working with Canopy to address the environmental damage caused by the production of viscose textiles, particularly the impact on Ancient- and Endangered-classified Forests.
The company is now expanding its focus to packaging by exploring Next Generation (Next Gen) solutions. These alternatives use more sustainable materials such as agricultural waste rather than traditional sources such as trees.
The apparel industry’s reliance on paper packaging has contributed to the deforestation of climate-critical regions. Approximately 3.1 billion trees are felled annually for packaging, including delivery boxes and shoe boxes.

By GlobalDataBoth Canopy and Patagonia see the development of tree-free packaging as a crucial step in reducing pressure on the world’s forests.
A commitment to change
Patagonia’s decision to join the Pack4Good initiative reflects its goal of minimising its environmental footprint.
According to Jennifer Patrick, Patagonia’s packaging and branding director, the company aims to continually improve its packaging materials through its partnership with Canopy.
Patagonia has already made strides in sustainability, using 100% recycled content in all its packaging and catalogues.
This updated partnership with Canopy will see Patagonia further develop and implement Next Gen packaging materials, which are made from non-forest alternatives such as agricultural byproducts.
The goal is to significantly reduce the reliance on traditional forest resources, contributing to a lower environmental impact overall.
Leading the way in sustainability
Patagonia has long been a leader in the move towards sustainable business practices, particularly in the fashion industry.
It was one of the first brands to transition to sourcing viscose and rayon from producers recognised as environmentally responsible by Canopy.
Now, its efforts are extending to the packaging sector, where it aims to make a significant impact by adopting innovative solutions.
Nicole Rycroft, founder and executive director of Canopy, expressed enthusiasm for Patagonia’s involvement in the Pack4Good initiative.
She emphasised the importance of finding low-carbon, non-forest-based alternatives to packaging, especially in light of the ongoing pressure on the world’s forests.
Patagonia’s support of Next Gen solutions positions it as a leader in the outdoor apparel sector’s journey towards greater sustainability.
