Multinational food and drink company PepsiCo has entered into an agreement with GreenDot to recycle plastic waste into materials for snack packaging.

The collaboration aligns with PepsiCo Europe’s goal to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic in its crisp bags by 2030.

As part of this partnership, PepsiCo Europe will support investment in GreenDot, which will facilitate the expansion of the latter’s recycling capabilities for recycled materials in Europe.

In Austria, GreenDot is establishing a partnership to construct a new sorting facility for used plastic packaging.

Meanwhile, it has strengthened its recycling capabilities in Italy with the acquisition of Synextra, a company specialising in plastic waste sorting and processing.

In addition, the company is expanding its sorting and recycling activities in Germany.

GreenDot provides comprehensive solutions for the recyclability of plastic, whether mechanically or chemically recycled.

It aims to maintain materials within the usage cycle and mitigate the environmental impact of packaging waste, including hard-to-recycle plastics that contribute to the climate crisis through incineration.

GreenDot CEO Laurent Auguste said: “This agreement is an important milestone for the industry. It further paves the way towards a circular economy of plastic packaging, with the support of a new type of long-term collaboration between key players of the value chain.

“I wish to congratulate PepsiCo for their vision, leadership and for walking the talk, in line with their goal to increase the recycled content in their packaging and to reduce their carbon footprint.

“GreenDot will invest in developing plastic packaging to packaging recycling capacities, including advanced recycling of polyolefins, providing needed solutions at scale for the food industry.”

The partnership has already yielded results with the launch of the new Sunbites crisp packaging, which contains 50% recycled plastic film.

The companies say they plan to expand this sustainable packaging solution further.
