Finland-based Pöyry has received an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) order from Brazilian company Klabin to develop a balance of plant (BOP) for the PUMA II project’s first phase.
As part of the contract, Pöyry will offer various services such as detail engineering of all disciplines, procurement and construction management services of the complementary plants, and interconnections between process islands.

The Puma II Project is a R$9.1bn ($2.285bn) project that will see the deployment of two kraftliner paper machines with integrated pulp production. The two machines are expected to increase the company’s annual paper production by 920,000t.
This project represents the largest investment by Klabin.
The company will begin construction work on the project in the second quarter of this year, followed by machine installations in two stages with a 24-month duration for each.
Pöyry was responsible for the conceptual study, basic engineering and investment estimate of the Puma II Project.
Pöyry Brazil president Fábio Bellotti da Fonseca noted that the agreement strengthens the company’s position in consulting and engineering in the pulp and paper industry, and its relations with Klabin.
Established in 1899, Klabin offers short-fibre, long-fibre and fluff pulp for corrugated packaging and industrial bags. It operates 17 industrial units in Brazil and one in Argentina.
Earlier this month, Pöyry created an initiative, PlasticsToBio, in a bid to address global plastic pollution.
As part of the initiative, the company will decouple plastics from fossil-based materials and turn all products into bio-based materials.
