UK-based can manufacturer Rexam has opened its new £115m wall-to-wall manufacturing plant in Widnau, Switzerland.
The facility has been developed beside the Rauch Trading can filling plant and is expected to produce 2.2 billion slim and sleek cans annually.
Proximity to the filling area will help the company to transfer the manufactured cans through wall-to-wall operations. This will, in turn, eliminate transportation costs and reduce regional traffic and CO2 emissions.
A single production line has currently been turned operational at the facility, while two other lines are to be opened later.
The new plant will be used by Rexam to produce cans in 200ml, 250ml and 355ml sizes.
Rexam CEO Graham Chipchase said: "Our investment in this cutting-edge facility in Widnau epitomises that goal by supporting one of our major customers with their growth ambitions.

Rexam Europe sector director Iain Percival said: "Throughout both the construction process and the training of the plant’s new employees, the team at Widnau has drawn on the experience of their Rexam colleagues at other plants and offices across Europe.
"Just as Rexam tries to foster a collaborative working relationship with customers, we do encourage collaborative working internally as well, working together as a One Rexam team."
In order to allow for more space, the plant washer has been placed in the facility on a mezzanine floor, while the fully automated warehouse has been set up on the plant’s roof.
The cupper and bodymaker have been installed on 120t blocks of concrete, which is supported by large springs and can help in restricting vibrations from machinery.
