Sabert Corporation, a sustainable food packaging solutions provider, has announced that its Texas, US, facility has achieved certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).

The certification covers all products made with the company’s moulded Pulp Plus and Pulp Ultra formulations at the Greenville facility, confirming its compliance with ASTM standards for compostable products in North America.

The BPI certification serves as third-party verification of Sabert’s position as a premier domestic manufacturer of moulded pulp foodservice packaging in the US.

It assures that Sabert’s products from the site can be industrially composted, breaking down into a nutrient-rich soil amendment at an appropriate rate.

The BPI certification provides assurance to brands, food companies, foodservice operators, and consumers that the packaging can be diverted from landfills through commercial composting processes.

Sabert CEO Paul McCann said: “Earning BPI certification for our state-of-the-art Texas facility is a major accomplishment that reinforces Sabert’s commitment to advancing packaging sustainability through proprietary innovation. This prestigious certification is extremely important to our customers who want environmentally responsible food packaging solutions.”

The 350,000ft² Greenville facility, operational since 2022, employs Sabert’s pulp formulation chemistry and processing techniques to produce a wide array of moulded fibre packaging items, all free from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

The plant also boasts advanced lab and engineering capabilities for ongoing research in material science and production technology, driving further innovation in the sector.

Sabert sustainability director Rebecca Locker said: “The foodservice packaging industry is quite complex, which is why Sabert’s ability to be a one-stop solutions provider of multiple sustainable substrates across a wide portfolio of products is so valuable.

“Receiving this third-party certification supports Sabert’s goal of increasing the volume and breadth of our sustainable products to help increase food waste diversion from the landfill and promote the responsible disposal of packaging at its end-of-life.”

In June this year, Sabert launched its new containers for the food takeout and delivery market.
