Indoor-grown produce brand Sensei Farms has unveiled a new sustainable packaging initiative for its range of leafy greens and salad mixes.

The new packaging design enhances sustainability while offering the same functional and food safety features expected from conventional plastic clamshells.

Sensei Farms Sales & Marketing senior vice-president Jessica Vasisht said: “From seed to shelf, we strive for innovation at every stage of our products.

“This focus allowed us to create a better, more impactful package that embodies the superior quality of our produce, without compromise.”

The new packaging boasts a 90% reduction in plastic by weight compared to the previous clamshell design.

The paperboard tray features a see-through base and branded side windows, offering 360 degrees of product visibility.

Additionally, the tray includes perforated panels for easy breakdown and a removable liner to facilitate recycling.

The ‘peel and reseal’ closure is another feature that contributes to product freshness and provides convenient storage.

The new packaging is reportedly retail-friendly and integrates smoothly into existing displays.

Sensei Farms claims to deliver these advancements without imposing additional costs on consumers and retailers.

Vasisht added: “Eco-friendly solutions often come with a premium on price, so we knew that barrier to adoption had to be removed.

“This is a significant leap forward for our category and just the beginning of what Sensei Farms has planned.”

The new packaging will be available at select Albertsons locations in the US Mid-Atlantic region, including Acme and Safeway stores, as well as major grocers in the Hawaiian Islands from mid-third quarter of 2024.
