By GlobalDataPresented annually by Kompack magazine and the Austrian Research Institute of Chemistry, the Green Packaging Star Award recognises achievements in sustainable packaging design and environmental responsibility.
The win qualifies SIG for the WorldStar competition, organised by the World Packaging Organization.
Gmundner Dairy, the first Austrian company to adopt SIG Terra Alu-free, is playing a pioneering role in sustainable packaging. This innovative solution reduces the carbon footprint of SIG’s standard carton packs by up to 23% (based on independent ISO [International Organization for Standardization]-compliant life-cycle assessments.
Since launching dairy products packaged with SIG Terra Alu-free, Gmundner Dairy has saved more than 160 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
“It’s a great accolade for SIG Terra Alu-free packaging material to be recognised as an outstanding innovation in the field of exceptional sustainable packaging solutions,” said Vanessa Bogner, marketing manager for D-A-CH [Germany, Austria and Switzerland] at SIG.
“Our SIG Terra portfolio is part of our continuous progress in this area, as we strive to develop an aseptic, alu-layer-free packaging material with full barrier protection, and a paper content of at least 90% by 2030 – with an interim target of at least 85% by 2025.”
The award-winning SIG Terra Alu-free is made from up to 82% FSC [Forest Stewardship Council]-certified renewable paperboard, combined with ultra-thin polymer layers for product protection without refrigeration.
This material structure eliminates the need for aluminium, ultimately reducing the environmental impact of aseptic packaging.
“As the first producer in Austria to bring shelf-stable milk to the market in an aseptic carton pack without an aluminum layer, we celebrate this outstanding award with our partner SIG,” said Christoph Engl, managing director of Gmundner Dairy.
“Together we continue to set a new benchmark in the field of sustainable packaging, by offering aseptic carton packs with no aluminum layer – a milestone in sustainability not only for our company, but also for retailers and consumers, who increasingly demand lower carbon, more sustainable packaging solutions.”
