Packaging giant SIG has announced the launch of a new project aimed at protecting and restoring forests in Malaysia.

The initiative, undertaken in partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Switzerland and WWF Malaysia, is part of SIG’s ongoing commitment to sustainable forestry practices.

The three-and-a-half-year project will focus on the Ulu Muda Forest Complex, a critical biodiversity hotspot in northern Peninsular Malaysia.

The initiative aims to improve the management of more than 170,000 hectares of forest and pilot the restoration of 25 hectares.

The partnership between SIG and WWF Switzerland was established in 2022 to support resilient forest ecosystems globally.

In addition to responsible sourcing practices within its value chain, SIG said it is committed to supporting at-risk forests in biodiversity hotspots.

The company’s first project under this partnership focused on protecting and restoring the Central Pacific Landscape in Mexico.

SIG’s second joint project in Malaysia aims to strengthen the resilience of the Ulu Muda Forest Complex, ensuring its continued ability to provide vital ecosystem services.

These services include water security, economic growth, and contributions to the country’s food security. Empowering local communities to champion conservation is a key component of this project.

As one of the last remaining large lowland forests in Malaysia, Ulu Muda is a key biodiversity hotspot. It is home to a diverse range of plants and animals, including endangered Asian elephants.

The forest is also a crucial water catchment for the region, supporting domestic, industrial, and agricultural water needs.

More than 4,900 people from neighbouring villages rely on Ulu Muda for their livelihoods and well-being.

SIG’s commitment to sustainable forestry is rooted in its reliance on wood fibres for the production of liquid packaging boards.

The company ensures the sustainable management of its source forests by purchasing 100% of its paperboard with Forest Stewardship Council certification.

By investing in forest conservation and restoration projects, SIG aims to create a positive impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The partnership with WWF Switzerland and Forests Forward is a key component of this effort.
