SMX (Security Matters) and Aegis Packaging have announced a collaborative ‘physical to digital’ sustainable packaging initiative, helping companies meet increasing global demand for circular, transparent, and efficient plastics.

The collaboration combines SMX’s expertise in invisible molecular marking and blockchain technology with Aegis Packaging’s O₂X coating, which is designed to improve the recyclability and verification of plastic packaging.

Aegis’s O₂X technology allows recyclable packaging to achieve high barrier performance, facilitating the transition from non-recyclable alternatives to recyclable options.

This shift is intended to meet growing regulatory and consumer demands for sustainable practices in packaging.

The partnership seeks to transform the traditional linear packaging model into a circular one, which focuses on reusing materials rather than disposal.

SMX’s patented markers are applied during the production process and remain with the packaging throughout its lifecycle. This enables real-time verification of recycled content, reuse loops, and the origins of the packaging via a secure digital record.

Aegis Packaging’s O₂X coating complements this by allowing mono-material packaging to replace multi-material options, simplifying sorting processes and increasing recyclate yield.

By reducing uncertainties associated with traditional recycling methods and supply chain verification, the collaboration aims to enhance transparency and accountability for manufacturers and brand owners.

Aegis Packaging business development manager Ong Kai Liang said: “This collaboration not only provides end-to-end traceability of plastic packaging but also ensures that businesses can easily document and demonstrate compliance with regulations, reduce reputational risk, and adopt scalable, more cost-effective packaging solutions.

“We believe the integration of SMX’s ‘physical to digital’ capability with Aegis’s high-barrier coating will be a catalyst for brands looking to innovate in sustainable plastics.”

The integration of digital reporting tools is expected to reduce the time and costs linked to manual audits, allowing companies to better combat greenwashing and build consumer trust while adhering to evolving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

By ensuring that material tracking and barrier performance are interconnected, SMX and Aegis Packaging are establishing a framework for genuine circularity, enabling efficient resource use and delivering measurable environmental advantages.
