Global producer of speciality chemicals Solenis has entered into a partnership with China-based PhaBuilder Biotechnology to advance sustainable paper packaging solutions.
The collaboration focuses on advancing polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)-based technology.
Solenis Global Strategic Marketing senior director William Kuecker said: “The global agreement between Solenis and PhaBuilder will enable unique technology to the paper packaging market to meet the growing need for more sustainable solutions in the packaging industry.”
By combining Solenis’ expertise in speciality chemicals with PhaBuilder’s innovative biotechnology, the partners aim to meet the evolving needs of the paper packaging market while minimising environmental impact.
Beijing PhaBuilder Biotechnology, established by Professor Guoqiang Chen of Tsinghua University, specialises in synthetic biology.
The company leverages ‘next-generation industrial biotechnology’ to produce high-value products such as PHA, a biodegradable material; cadaverine, a nylon 56 precursor; and ectoine, a pharmaceutical intermediate.

By GlobalDataPhaBuilder is currently constructing two PHA plants and plans to establish up to five large-scale production bases in China within the next five years.

Solenis, which is owned by Platinum Equity, specialises in providing sustainable solutions for water-intensive industries such as food and beverage, consumer, and industrial, among others.
With a vast portfolio of water treatment chemistries and process aids, the company aims to enhance operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
It is headquartered in Delaware, US, and currently operates a total of 69 manufacturing facilities worldwide and employs more than 16,100 professionals.
