Membership-based organisation Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) has launched a competition for sustainable protective packaging solutions.

SPC’s partner environmental solutions platform Ubuntoo will co-host the Protective Packaging Design Challenge. The platform already hosts over 700 plastic pollution, textile and food waste solutions.

Innovators, entrepreneurs and start-ups can participate in the open challenge with new ideas and pilot-ready solutions.

The challenge welcomes all sustainable solutions that can be implemented to protect and help safely transport different types of products.

SPC associate director Adam Gendell said: “We have seen tremendous innovation in protective packaging and we are excited to see what new developments are coming.

“Brand owners and retailers are hungry for new solutions.”

The challenge also includes other partners such as circular economy focused investment firm Closed Loop Partners and the Retail Innovation Center from the Retail Industry Leader Association (RILA).

Closed Loop Partners will serve as an associate partner and the Retail Innovation Center will act as an affiliate partner.

The challenge will select three final winners. The initiative will also include experts from the SPC, Closed Loop Partners and academia as judges.

Amazon Packaging Lab, West Elm, Lowe’s, Wayfair and RILA will be part of the advisor group.

Architect Bill McDonough is the founder of the SPC. The company’s list of members includes 3M, Ahold Delhaize, Amcor, American Packaging Corporation (APC), Berlin Packaging, Bemis and others.
