Packaging solutions firm Tetra Pak has revealed plans to launch a new paper-based straw, destined for its portion-sized carton packages, which could replace traditional plastic straws.
The eco-friendly straw is expected to be unveiled by the end of this year and is part of Tetra Pak’s efforts to tackle the rising issue of plastic straw waste.

Plastic straws are currently part of Tetra Pak’s portion-sized cartons and can have lethal impacts on the environment if not disposed correctly and recycled.
Tetra Pak previously urged its customers to push straws ‘back in the pack’ for safe disposal.
The company is currently working on the development of the straw with a view to launching it by the end of the year.
Tetra Pak Product Management and Commercial Operations executive vice-president Charles Brand said: “It sounds simple enough, but in reality, there are a number of significant challenges to producing a paper straw with the required properties.
“That said, our development team is confident they can find a solution and that we’ll have a paper straw alternative ready to launch by the end of the year.”
The company said that its packages averagely contain around 75% paperboard and the development of paper straws would contribute to achieving its long-term ambition of offering a completely renewable portfolio.
