Thermo Fisher Scientific, a biotechnology research company, has enhanced sustainability with the launch of a new packaging for 125,000 of its Invitrogen antibodies that reduce waste and carbon emission.

This initiative is set to enhance the customer experience and contribute to the company’s sustainability goals by transitioning from cold-chain to ambient temperature shipping.

The new packaging solution comes after Thermo Fisher has verified that a significant portion of the Invitrogen antibody range can be transported at ambient temperatures without compromising quality.

The shift away from cold gel packs to a new 100% kerbside recyclable paper packaging is expected to eliminate over 216,000lb of paper and 440,000lb of gel ice packs annually.

This packaging strategy is projected to result in a 90% reduction in shipment mass, improve freight density, and notably decrease carbon emissions.

Thermo Fisher Scientific protein cell analysis vice-president Ellie Mahjubi said: “Our ambient shipping initiative is a response to our customers’ expectations and demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and innovation.

“We are proud to launch this critical change, delivering on Thermo Fisher’s Mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We believe this transition will have a considerable impact on the global research community by reducing packaging waste and transport emissions without compromising the quality of our antibodies.”

The introduction of ambient shipping and Sustainable Forestry Initiative-certified packaging is the latest step in Thermo Fisher’s ongoing commitment to more sustainable shipping practices.

The company continues to ship many temperature-sensitive products in a paper cooler, providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional coolers for products that still require low-temperature transport.
