Thin Film Electronics (Thinfilm) has been contracted to provide its SpeedTap tags for Norway-based wine and liquor wholesaler Arcus’ Linie Aquavit brand of spirits.

During a field trial, the smartphone-readable SpeedTap tags, based on near field communication (NFC) technology, will be fitted on the LINIE Aquavit bottles by the second quarter of 2017.

Once applied, the tags will be integrated with Thinfilm CNECT software portal to enable a direct connection between Arcus and its consumers.

Each of the unique SpeedTap tags is virtually impossible to clone and can be identified by an NFC-enabled smartphone or device.

"We are excited to partner with a fellow-Norwegian firm and look forward to working closely with Thinfilm on this innovative initiative."

After tapping the tags, smart devices wirelessly communicate with the CNECT software portal to provide product news and information, as well as brand analytics and reporting.

Arcus Aquavit category manager Romain Jourdan said: “LINIE aquavit is the world’s oldest aquavit brand, created in 1821.

“We have a strong focus on innovation in order to keep the brand contemporary and build awareness around the Aquavit category.

“We are excited to partner with a fellow-Norwegian firm and look forward to working closely with Thinfilm on this innovative initiative.”

In November 2016, Thinfilm announced its collaboration with identification tag manufacturer Bedford Industries to develop intelligent packaging solutions for consumer brand companies.
