French multi-energy food company TotalEnergies has partnered with extrusion line manufacturer COLINES to create an unlaminated, recyclable stand-up pouch.
The partners produced the Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) film that is used in the pouch for food-contact applications.
The MDO film was made using the COLINES cast line, Polycast, in combination with the MDO line.
The resulting asymmetrical structure film features low-density sealing layer on one side and high-density stiff layer on the other.
The MDO polyethylene (PE) film consists of TotalEnergies’ Supertough and Lumicene high-density PE to offer varying thicknesses to meet customers’ needs.
Printing company Cirepa printed the film packaging firm, while Dry-Top was responsible for converting the film into a stand-up pouch.

By GlobalDataThe full PE recyclable pouch reduces packaging thickness and is expected to replace non-recyclable packaging made from multi-material film.
TotalEnergies Europe & Orient polymers vice-president Olivier Greiner said: “This collaboration is in line with the recent developments to provide packaging solutions that are fully mechanically recyclable, with the end goal to bring more qualitative feedstock on the market.
“This development was made possible by our broad Lumicene and Supertough product range bringing outstanding processability, as well as excellent mechanical and optical properties.”
Colines research and development manager Nicola Lombardini said: “We are proud to be part of this very important project, made possible also by the proprietary COLINES technology in the field of MDO, as well as by innovative and patented solutions for the production of MDO-PE films with cast technology.
“Our portfolio includes various solutions for the production of ‘green’ films, with a high recycled content or suitable for complete recycling, in order to satisfy practically all market requests.”
In October last year, TotalEnergies developed a high-barrier recyclable packaging solution for food-grade applications alongside Windmöller & Hölscher and Mitsubishi Chemical Group.
