Denmark’s Tresu Group has launched a new flexo printing unit that provides high-gloss metallic finishes on digitally printed folding cartons.

The the new Flexo Kit metallic ink unit is primarily designed to be installed on production lines that feature an HP Indigo 30000 digital press and a TRESU iCoat coater, but can be customised for use on other machines.

Flexo Kit unit uses printing sleeves and features a dedicated anilox roll, a chambered doctor blade and a pump.

The pumps and chamber doctor blade, included in the unit, offers an enclosed ink flow across the system, enabling tight regulation of viscosity and pressure, and preventing foaming.

The unit also provides a separate uncontaminated supply system for gold, silver, aerodyne, and other special-effect coating finishes.

"TresuFlexo Kit enables digital converters to add this high-value embellishment with minimal extra logistics, inline and at fast speeds."

TresuDigitalSolutions vice-president Kim Krintel said: “Metallic inks are an essential requirement for folding carton niches such as chocolates and confectionery, and flexo is the ideal process for achieving the high-gloss effect.

“TresuFlexo Kit enables digital converters to add this high-value embellishment with minimal extra logistics, inline and at fast speeds.”

Featuring drying characteristics of metallic inks, the Flexo Kit unit can be applied at speeds of up to 4,600 sheets per hour.

The unit also features an automatic cleaning facility, enabling the users to change ink in minutes.

Last month, Tresu introduced a new adhesive tape, iTape, which is designed to optimise stability, print quality and efficiency when used with sleeves on flexo coaters.
