The packaging is expected to prevent 200t of polystyrene boards from going to landfill, and create almost 450t of cardboard for recycling annually.

Produced by Stateside, the corrugated boards have a lower carbon impact weighing 20g, which is less than a third of Co-op’s competitors.

"Pizza discs have been high on our priority list for some time, and we’ve been working hard to find the right replacement."

Co-operative Group environment manager Iain Ferguson said: “Pizza discs have been high on our priority list for some time, and we’ve been working hard to find the right replacement.

“This change is a major step in our journey to make all of our packaging easy to recycle, and we will be making further announcements on packaging in the months ahead.”

Co-op is also planning to make fully recyclable packaging solutions for its own-brands.

As an immediate measure, the company is aiming to make 80% of its own-brand packaging recyclable by 2020 and has already introduced widely recycled blue plastic for packing mushrooms, and a single plastic material for cooked meat trays.

Co-op will further be shifting from black plastic to card packaging for tomatoes later this year.
