UK cardboard box maker DS Smith has supported design and manufacturing of a new eco-friendly carton to pack French champagne brand Veuve Clicquot's existing range of products.
The new biodegradable and recyclable carton was created after a three years of research, conducted by DS Smith along with Veuve Clicquot and Italian paper manufacturer Favini.
Made using paper from a blend of grape residue from Veuve Clicquot and natural fibres, the newly created carton features a printing that is based on solvent-free ink and varnish.
The pack also features a pasted label, which is developed from sugar-cane.
DS Smith was able to save 5.2t of virgin fibre, while producing a batch of the carton.
DS Smith consumer packaging key account wines and spirits manager Jean-Charles Moras said: “Veuve Clicquot had clear ideas of what they wanted to achieve from this collaboration and we welcomed the opportunity to spend time researching and developing this unique design for them.”

By GlobalDataEarlier this month, the company collaborated with Amazing Chocolate Workshop, to develop a packaging solution that features a wide and clear window on one side of the pack.
The box packaging, which incorporates durable, food safe material, can be used for gifting purposes.
Capable of boosting productivity in packing halls, warehousing and distribution, the new box eliminates use of thermoformed trays to pack chocolates.
