Compostable insulation and recyclable thermal packaging manufacturer Vericool has announced a partnership with US meat delivery service start-up ButcherBox, to serve as its packaging partner.
As part of the $10m deal, ButcherBox will deliver premium quality meats in the sustainable, high-performing Vericooler I packaging directly to the homes of its customers in the western service region.
ButcherBox delivers grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, and heritage-bred pork.
The Vericooler sustainable cold-chain packaging will replace expanded polystyrene (EPS) and allow the meat delivery service to enhance the sustainability standards of its products.
ButcherBox founder and CEO Mike Salguero said: “At ButcherBox, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality product to our customers – that begins with raising animals humanely, and it ends with shipping products out in packaging materials that are all biodegradable or recyclable.
“Vericoolers work and they are sustainable, keeping our products cold from packaging to the moment that our customers open up their ButcherBox.

By GlobalData“Vericoolers go right into curbside recycling – and that is really important to us and to our customers.”
After freezing the fresh meat, ButcherBox ships it with dry ice the containers provided by Vericool.
Manufactured from post-consumer materials, the Vericooler I has the ability to keep meats cold from packaging to receipt.
The packaging is also designed to keep edge loss to a minimum, which increases temperature control. It can be placed in curbside recycling after removing the compostable insulation pillow.
Previously, ButcherBox was sending 20 to 50 truckloads of EPS packaging to the landfill each month.
