US-based firm Veritiv has introduced a new paperboard-based packaging solution sourced from naturally occurring materials.

The new packaging option, known as Earth Pact, is made using 100% sugarcane bagasse fibres, a tree-free fibre source that is both recyclable and compostable.

In order to market the paperboard, the company has partnered with Carvajal Pulp and Paper.

Veritiv offered the Earth Pact line of products to some of its customers, including Biossance, which approached the company for sustainable paperboard, structural and graphic package designs, kitting services, transportation, and warehousing services.

The company expects to leverage its Earth Pact line of products and designers at its packaging design centres to create new and sustainable package designs that offer greater visibility on the shelf, minimise dimensional weight and provide an improved experience to customers.

With a network of 170 distribution centres throughout the US, Mexico and Canada, Veritiv is a business-to-business distributor of packaging, facility solutions, print and publishing products and services.

In September last year, the company completed the acquisition of All American Containers, which distributes rigid packaging, including plastic, glass and metal containers, caps, closures and plastic pouches.

The acquisition was made to gain additional marketing, selling and distribution channels into the growing US rigid packaging market.

For the first quarter of this year, Veritiv reported net sales of $2.1bn, which represents an increase of 5.3% from the previous year.
