Versalis, the chemical division of Eni, and Crocco, a flexible packaging company, have announced a partnership to produce food packaging films using chemical recycling processes.
The packaging films are made from raw materials partly sourced from the recycling of post-consumer plastics, aiming for mass production to cater to the large-scale retail market.
Production of the packaging, made from Versalis’ product Balance, enables the creation of a recycled film suitable for food contact without compromising essential technical performance and health properties required in packaging designed for food use.
Versalis CEO Adriano Alfani said: “Circularity is one of the pillars of our strategy and we are committed to developing complementary technologies in the area of mechanical and chemical polymer recycling.
“Diversification of raw materials allows us to offer the market low-carbon solutions, making sustainable use of resources a reality, partly thanks to supply chain collaborations such as this innovation with our business partner Crocco.”
The creation of packaging containing material derived from chemical recycling is in line with Versalis’ commitment to circular economy principles and its sustainability ambitions.

The chemical recycling process has the capability to regenerate plastics to a virgin-like state, meeting the stringent legislation on purity and safety standards for the material.
Crocco CEO Renato Zelcher said: “This new technology for the production of safe and efficient recycled packaging opens up important new frontiers for the circular economy in the highly regulated food industry. We are proud to have started this Made in Italy supply chain with Versalis.”
In September last year, Versalis announced signing an agreement with Technip Energies, a France-based engineering and technology company, for energy transition.
